Axel Reidlinger studied law in Vienna and Paris. He holds a law degree from the University of Vienna (Dr.iur.) and a business degree from the Vienna University of Economics and Business (Mag.rer.soc.oec.). Following two years as an assistant at the civil and business law department of the Vienna University of Economics and Business and an internship with the European Commission in Brussels, he completed a postgraduate degree at the College of Europe in Bruges, specializing in European law (LL.M.).
In 1994 he joined the Austrian lawfirm Heller Löber Bahn Partners, and worked for their Brussels office for several years. After his return to Austria and his admission to the Austrian bar (1998) Axel became a partner at the international lawfirm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in 2001, and headed the firm’s Austrian competition practice until April 2015. In May 2015 he co-founded Reidlinger Schatzmann Rechtsanwälte.
Axel Reidlinger has comprehensive experience in advising clients on issues relating to merger control, cartels and other competition restrictions in dealings with the Austrian competition authorities, the European Commission in Brussels and the European courts in Luxembourg. He also represents clients in proceedings aimed at the enforcement of private claims, e.g. defense against claims to injunctive relief under competition law before the cartel courts, and against claims for damages before civil law courts.
Axel Reidlinger is the author of a number of specialist publications, including “Das österreichische Kartellrecht” (Linde Verlag, 3rd edition 2014, co-authored with Isabella Hartung), a textbook on Austrian competition law widely recognized for its practice-oriented approach. His further areas of expertise include energy law and EU state aid law, as well as general European law.
